JO MEISNER

Works          About          Biography

“My practice spans photography, installation and sculpture assemblage and probes contemporary notions of identity”.

Jo Meisner’s work is widely acclaimed by critics and the public, and is included in the collections of many well-known institutions and private collections. Her work aligns itself with the history of figurative painting as well as the traditions of street photography and the history of textile manufacture. Engaging with everyday objects, “I do not consider myself a photographer; more a collector of pictures….for me the process is as important as the finished work”.

The theme of the 2018 show in Paris, ‘Identity’, was the intrinsic strength of the individual within a diverse and changing society. Jo explored this theme with works inspired by Paris, by reworking photographs taken in the streets of the capital with carefully chosen textiles, and working digital prints into laser cut perspex. The Crowd and the individual were two important subjects in her work, variously focusing on the cultural and social impact of forced migration and the fabric of the individual psyche.

Jo Meisner sadly passed away from an illness in 2019. Her work and bright spirit live on.
